Africa is blessed with a lot of talented players who at some point had represent countries at top levels in football. These players play at the biggest clubs and win numerous trophies for their respective European teams. But when it comes to their country, they have failed to win the most important trophy in a country’s history for their fatherland.

DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast)
Didier Drogba was like a billboard during his playing days, the Ivorian was very popular but in Europe and Africa. The Chelsea legend won a hatful of honours at Stamford Bridge, played three World Cup with Ivory Coast, including their qualification in 2006. During the 2012 Afcon, he was the top scorer but he retired before the Elephant’s triumph success in Equitorial Guinea in 2015. Drogba failed to win the AFCON trophy for his country before retirement.
Nwankwo Kano (Nigeria)
Nwankwo Kano popular called papilo was the darling of the Super Eagles in the 1990s. He won the Olympics Gold at Atlanta 1996 including the Champions League with Ajax and the Premier League with Arsenal but he has never scored at the AFCON nor won the tournament in his career.. That is the only trophy he failed to deliver for his country aside the World Cup.

MICHAEL ESSIEN (GHANA)
Michael was the pacesetter for Ghana football back then, he was a role model. But his career was suffered injury hiccups. He represented Ghana at the 2006 and 2014 World Cup and Nations Cup. Having won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup etc with Chelsea he hasn’t won anything at all for his country.
SADIO MANE (SENEGAL)
The current African best player has not won anything for his county despite club success with Liverpool. Though his career is still waxing strong let’s hope before retirement he will help Senegal win their first ever AFCON trophy as a country.

NABY LAYE KEITA (GUINEA)
Naby Laye Keita is a a Guinea Professional Footballer who plays as a central midfieder for Premier League club Liverpool and Guinean national team. The 27-year-old was a shining light for RB Leipzig during the 2016 season. He joined Liverpool in 2018, he won the the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool but he has failed to guide his country to national glory. Guinea were knocked out of the group stage of the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
In conclusion, these players have excelled exceptionally at club level but failed to replicate such achievements at International level. Sadio Mane and Naby Kaita still have a chance to deliver the trophy before retirement, while Legend like Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and others on the list have called it quit in football.
